Yes, if you're registered with the Australian Counselling Association (ACA) or Vocational Mental Health Practitioners Association Australia (VMHPAA), supervision hours with me can be claimed toward your professional development requirements. If you're registered with other associations, please check with them directly about their supervision requirements and whether external supervisors are accepted, as policies vary between organisations.
No, you don't need to be registered with a professional association to receive supervision. While many counsellors pursue supervision to meet registration requirements, supervision is valuable for any practitioner committed to ethical practice and professional development, regardless of formal association membership.
Yes! I encourage you to participate both individual and group supervision. Some supervisees find value in having regular individual sessions combined with occasional group participation for peer connection, while others prefer one format consistently. You can discuss what might work best for you during your Supervision Enquiry Call, and you're free to adjust your approach as your needs change.
Best practice recommends one hour of supervision for every twenty clients you see, and the ACA recommends a minimum of ten hours of supervision per year. However, you can choose to have supervision as often as you need - there's no limit to how many supervision sessions you can attend. While best practice provides a generalised guideline, sometimes situations occur in counselling sessions that leave you feeling challenged or unsure, and you may benefit from additional supervision during those times. Regular monthly supervision helps you maintain consistent professional support and prevents issues from building up.
Preparation helps you get the most out of supervision, though there's flexibility in how you approach it. Consider which domains of the STEP UP framework (Support, Tracking, Education, Performance, U/self-care, Practice) you'd most like to focus on in your session. If you have a particular case you want to discuss, make some de-identified notes about the client history, the challenge you're facing, and what you're hoping to gain from the discussion. For more detailed guidance on preparing for supervision, check out (blog post/resource). You can also complete our Supervision Preparation Form to help structure your thinking before sessions.
